Archival Collections

Jess Jessop incorporated Lesbian and Gay Archives of San Diego, now Lambda Archives of San Diego, in 1987 with a collection of materials that he and Doug Moore had gathered. Lambda Archives of San Diego is now one of the best-maintained collections of LGBTQ+ history in the country, which houses the Fritz Klein Bisexual Archives and a tremendous Pride collection. Our mission is to collect, preserve, and share the history of LGBTQ+ people in San Diego, Northern Baja California and Imperial County region. History is best reflected in the records and cultural artifacts of those people who are directly involved in its events. Lambda Archives is dedicated to preserving and interpreting this important historical material and making it available for learning. Lambda Archives of San Diego (LASD) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

# **Privacy Policy**

While the mission of Lambda Archives of San Diego is to collect, preserve, and share the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people in San Diego, Northern Baja California and Imperial County region, we are careful to avoid violating the privacy of individuals represented in the collection. Toward that end, we redact personally identifying information such as social security numbers, personal phone numbers, and home addresses. We also redact last names on sensitive materials that were not designed or intended for public circulation. If any materials on this site violate personal privacy, please contact us and we will address the situation immediately. No assumption should be made about any individual’s gender, sexual orientation or other characteristic based upon a mention of them in this digital repository.

# **Copyright Notice and Terms of Use**

Materials displayed in Lambda Archives of San Diego's (LASD) online collections may be protected by the U.S. Copyright Law ([Title 17, United States Code](https://web.archive.org/web/20121025160042/http://www.copyright.gov/title17/)). Under the law, photocopies or reproductions produced by libraries and archives are not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." Any reproduction of items beyond that allowed by fair use requires the written permission of LASD and/or the copyright owners.

# **Take Down Notice and Policy**

Digitized collections are made accessible for purposes of education and research. Lambda Archives of San Diego (LASD) has made efforts to give attribution to rights holders when possible and has taken steps to identify and remediate sensitive information that could threaten the privacy and security of individuals, organizations or other entities represented in the collections.

If you hold the rights to materials in our digitized collections that are unattributed, please let us know so that we may maintain accurate information about these
materials. If you are a rights holder and are concerned that you have found material on LASD sites for which you have not granted permission (or is not covered by a copyright exception under U.S. copyright laws), you may request the removal of the material by submitting a notice, with the elements described below, to **info@lambdaarchives.org**.

If sensitive or private information has inadvertently been included in digital collections, living individuals whose private information is exposed (or who are acting on behalf of a minor child or an incapacitated parent, spouse, domestic partner or adult child) are welcome to submit a take-down request. All such requests will be reviewed by relevant LASD stakeholders, who may ask for additional information to better understand the issue and its consequences.

**Please include the following in your notice:**

- Identification of the material and information to permit us to locate the material, including collection name and URL.
- Your contact information, including name, address, telephone number, and email address.
- The reason why you are requesting the take-down, such as copyright violation or privacy concerns.
- For copyright violation: A statement that you are the owner, or authorized to act on behalf of the owner, of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed and that you have a good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or
the law.

**Upon receipt of a request, LASD staff will:**

- Promptly acknowledge the request via email or other means of communication if you do not have an email account.
- Assess the validity of the request.
- Upon request, we may temporarily remove the material from public view while we assess the concern.
- Upon completion of the assessment, we will take appropriate action and communicate that action to you.

# **Explicit Content**

Though objects within the digital repository are not restricted, explicit materials that may not be suitable for some audiences are marked to notify users. Diane F. Germain was a French-American lesbian-feminist psychiatric social worker and a notable cartoonist. She conducted the Lesbian History Project and was one of the founding members of Dykes on Hikes, The Lesbian Referral Services, Beautiful Lesbian Thespians, and California Women's Art Collective. She was an early principal member of the San Diego Lesbian Organization and a collective member of both Las Hermanas, a women's cultural center and coffee-house, and the Califia Community, a feminist educational retreat. She worked at Lambda Archives throughout the 1990s interviewing women for history and gathering collections.
